How to Make Apple Crisp—Slow Cooker Edition

September 28, 2025 · In: DESSERT, FAMILY-FRIENDLY RECIPES

A cozy slow cooker apple crisp with tender spiced apples and a buttery oat topping—simple, delicious, and perfect for busy families.

There’s just something about apple crisp that feels like home. The smell of apples bubbling away with cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves instantly makes the whole house feel cozy. On the day I made this, it was one of those busy work-and-homeschool days where we balanced errands, cooking outside on the patio, and finishing up schoolwork. By the time the rain rolled in that evening, this easy apple crisp recipe was waiting for us—warm, spiced, and topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

One of my favorite things about this dessert is how simple it is to put together. No complicated crust, no fancy equipment—just apples, a buttery oat topping, and a slow cooker that does the work for you. It’s the kind of recipe that busy families can pull off on a weeknight, and it doubles as a fun way to get kids involved in the kitchen. From peeling apples to sprinkling on the topping, every step is hands-on and approachable.

If you’ve been looking for an easy apple crisp recipe that works for homeschool days, busy schedules, or just when you’re craving something sweet and comforting, this one is it

Why You’ll Love This Apple Crisp

Apple crisp is one of those timeless desserts that everyone seems to love, and for good reason. It’s simple, comforting, and endlessly adaptable. This slow cooker version takes the classic apple crisp and makes it even easier—you can prep it in the morning, let it cook while you go about your day, and come back to a warm dessert that smells like fall in your kitchen.

What makes this apple crisp especially family-friendly is how approachable it is. No rolling out dough or babysitting the oven—just peel and slice the apples, toss them with sugar and spices, and top with a buttery oat crumble. From there, the slow cooker does all the work.

It’s also the perfect recipe to make with kids. They can help measure ingredients, sprinkle on the topping, or even learn how different apple varieties taste once baked. For homeschool families, it’s one of those delicious “life skills lessons” that doubles as dessert.

Whether you’re serving it for a weeknight treat, a cozy rainy-day sweet, or even as part of a holiday spread, this apple crisp will quickly become a favorite.

Everything You Need to Make Apple Crisp

This recipe is simple, but having the right tools and ingredients makes all the difference. Here’s everything you’ll need to make this apple crisp come out perfectly every time:

🛠 Tools

  • Slow Cooker or Triple Crock Pot – Hands-off cooking that lets the apples get tender while the topping turns golden.

This Triple Slow Cooker Buffet Server has been a total game-changer in my kitchen. With three 2.5-quart oval ceramic pots, it lets me cook and serve multiple dishes at once—without extra pans or stress.

Here’s why you’ll love it:

  • Cook or serve three dishes at once.
  • Individual temperature controls
  • Built-in lid rests
  • Dishwasher-safe pots & lids
  • Durable stoneware

  • Apple Peeler + Sharp Knife – For peeling and slicing apples into even wedges.
  • Mixing Bowls – One for the apple filling and one for the oat topping.

This set is beautiful and practical. With three generous sizes (46 oz, 80 oz, and 140 oz), I use the smallest for dry ingredients, the medium for wet, and the largest when doubling the recipe or tossing a big salad.

They’re:

  • Oven-, microwave-, and dishwasher-safe
  • Durable and chip-resistant
  • Designed to nest for easy cabinet storage

Whether you’re mixing batters or serving meals, these bowls work hard and look great on the counter.

  • Measuring Cups + Spoons – To keep the filling and topping balanced.

This set is as practical as it is beautiful. With 9 essential pieces (4 measuring cups and 5 spoons), you’ll have everything you need to measure flour, sugar, spices, liquids, and even coffee with confidence.

They’re:

  • Engraved with U.S. & metric units for accurate measurements
  • Stackable for easy storage in tight kitchen spaces
  • Made of food-grade stainless steel with a durable, rust-resistant gold finish
  • Dishwasher-safe and easy to clean
  • Stylish enough to display on your counter while still tough enough for daily use

🍎 Apple Crisp Filling

  • Apples – Honeycrisp are my favorite for their balance of sweet and tart, but Cosmic Crisp, Granny Smith, or Gala also work.
  • Fresh Lemon Juice – Helps prevent browning and brightens the flavor.
  • Vanilla Extract – Adds warmth and depth to the apples.

This isn’t just vanilla—it’s a pantry essential with a legacy of flavor and quality that’s stood the test of time. Made with Madagascar vanilla beans, Watkins Pure Vanilla Extract brings warm, aromatic depth to any recipe, from cookies to coffee.

  • Sugar + Brown Sugar – The combo gives the filling sweetness with a touch of caramel flavor.
  • Cornstarch – Thickens the filling so it’s not runny.
  • Spices – Cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, cardamom, and cloves create that classic apple crisp flavor.

🍯 Apple Crisp Topping

  • Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats – For that classic crisp texture. (Use certified gluten-free if needed.)
  • Almond Flour – Keeps the topping light while adding a nutty flavor.
  • Brown Sugar – Sweetens and caramelizes as it bakes.
  • Cinnamon + Salt – Balance sweetness with just the right spice.
  • Unsalted Butter – Cold and cubed, this binds the topping and creates that golden, crumbly finish. (Plant-based works too!)

💡 Pro Tips

  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for the ultimate comfort dessert.
  • Slice apples into even wedges so they cook at the same rate.
  • Don’t skip the cornstarch—it helps the filling set instead of turning watery.

Ingredients for Apple Crisp

Apple Crisp Filling

  • 6 cups Honeycrisp apples (about 6 medium), peeled and sliced into ½″ wedges
  • 2 tsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup (50g) light brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground ginger
  • ⅛ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ⅛ tsp ground cloves

Apple Crisp Topping

  • 2 cups (200g) old-fashioned rolled oats (certified gluten-free if needed)
  • 1 cup (100g) almond flour
  • ¾ cup (150g) light brown sugar, packed
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¾ cup (170g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed (regular or plant-based)

Step-by-Step: How to Make Apple Crisp in the Slow Cooker

If you like a crunchy topping (same!), the key is cooking the apples first, then adding the oat crumble halfway through.

Step 1: Prep the Apples

Peel and slice about 6 medium apples into ½-inch wedges. In a bowl, toss with lemon juice, vanilla, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves until evenly coated.

Step 2: Start the Filling

Grease the slow cooker insert. Add the spiced apples and spread into an even layer.
Cook: HIGH 1½–2 hours (or LOW ~3 hours) until the apples begin to soften and release their juices.

Peeled and sliced apples coated with cinnamon and spices in a slow cooker for apple crisp.

Why this works: Letting the apples cook first concentrates their juices and keeps the crisp from getting soggy later.

Step 3: Mix the Topping (while apples cook)

In a separate bowl, combine rolled oats, almond flour, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Cut in the cold cubed butter with a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture looks sandy/pebbly and clumps when pressed.

Oatmeal crumble topping layered over apple filling in a slow cooker before baking into apple crisp.

Step 4: Add the Topping

Lift the lid and sprinkle the oat mixture evenly over the partially cooked apples. Don’t stir—just cover the fruit.

Step 5: Keep the Topping Crisp (steam hack)

Place a thick paper towel or clean kitchen towel directly under the lid (between the lid and the crock) to catch condensation. Make sure the towel edges don’t touch any hot surfaces.
Cook again: HIGH ~1½ hours (or LOW ~3 hours) until the apples are tender and the topping is set and golden.

Crisp Topping Tip: That towel absorbs steam so droplets don’t drip back onto the crumble—hello, crunchy topping.

Step 6: Serve Warm

Scoop your apple crisp into bowls and serve as-is or with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel.

Optional extra-crisp finish: If you want even more color, briefly spoon the topping onto a sheet pan and broil 1–2 minutes, then return it to the slow cooker. (Only if you’re feeling extra!)

Ingredients

Apple Crisp Filling

  • 6 cups Honeycrisp apples about 6 medium, peeled and sliced into ½″ wedges
  • 2 tsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup 50g granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup 50g light brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground ginger
  • ⅛ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ⅛ tsp ground cloves

Apple Crisp Topping

  • 2 cups 200g old-fashioned rolled oats (certified gluten-free if needed)
  • 1 cup 100g almond flour
  • ¾ cup 150g light brown sugar, packed
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¾ cup 170g unsalted butter, cold and cubed (regular or plant-based)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Apples – Place sliced apples in the slow cooker. Add lemon juice, vanilla, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cornstarch, and spices. Stir until apples are evenly coated.
  • Cook the Filling – Cover and cook apples on HIGH for 1 ½–2 hours (or LOW for 3 hours) until they begin to soften and release juices.
  • Make the Topping – While apples are cooking, mix oats, almond flour, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon in a medium bowl. Cut in cold butter with a pastry cutter or fork until crumbly.
  • Add the Topping – Sprinkle the oat mixture evenly over the partially cooked apples in the slow cooker.
  • Finish Cooking – Cover again and cook for another 1 ½ hours on HIGH (or 3 hours on LOW), until apples are tender and the topping is golden and crisp.
  • Serve – Scoop warm apple crisp into bowls and enjoy with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel sauce.

Notes

  • Timing Tip: Adding the topping halfway ensures it stays crisp instead of soggy.
  • Crisp Topping Hack: Place a thick paper towel (or clean kitchen towel) directly under the slow cooker lid while the topping cooks. This absorbs excess steam so the oat topping stays crunchy.
  • Apple Varieties: Honeycrisp is ideal, but Granny Smith, Pink Lady, or Fuji also work well.
  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3–4 days. Freeze up to 3 months. For easy portions, freeze in ice cube trays and transfer to freezer bags.

FAQ: Apple Crisp in the Slow Cooker

Can I make apple crisp without oats?

Yes! While oats give apple crisp its signature texture, you can substitute crushed graham crackers, granola, or even chopped nuts for crunch. It changes the texture slightly, but still tastes amazing.

What apples work best for apple crisp?

Honeycrisp are my go-to for their sweet-tart flavor and firm texture, but Granny Smith, Pink Lady, Fuji, or Cosmic Crisp also hold up well. Mixing two varieties gives the best balance of flavor.

Can I prep this apple crisp ahead of time?

Absolutely. You can peel and slice the apples a day in advance (toss them with lemon juice to prevent browning) and store them in the fridge. The topping can be mixed ahead and chilled separately. Assemble and cook when you’re ready.

How do I keep the topping crunchy in the slow cooker?

The trick is to cook the apples first, then add the topping halfway through. For extra crispiness, place a thick paper towel under the lid to absorb steam. You can also finish the topping under the broiler for a couple of minutes if you want more crunch.

Can I freeze apple crisp?

Yes! Let it cool completely, then store portions in airtight containers or freezer bags for up to 3 months. Reheat in the oven for the best texture.

Storage & Leftovers

One of the best parts about making slow cooker apple crisp is how well it stores for later. Here’s how to keep it fresh and delicious:

  • Refrigerator: Store leftovers in an airtight container for 3–4 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven until warm. These Glass Meal Prep Containers are tried and true!

When it comes to storing apple crisp (or any leftovers), I love using these Glass Meal Prep Containers. They’re practical, eco-friendly, and look so much better than stained plastic containers.

They’re:

  • Stackable for easy storage and space-saving in the fridge.
  • Perfect for portioning meals, snacks, or even freezing single servings of apple crisp.

  • Freezer: Apple crisp freezes beautifully. Let it cool completely, then portion into freezer-safe containers. Freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Quick Grab Tip: Freeze in individual servings so you can reheat just what you need.

When it comes to meal prep and leftovers, convenience is everything—and these 8oz containers deliver. They’re the perfect size for portioning sauces, snacks, and small servings of soups or sides.

Here’s why they’re a staple in my kitchen:

  • Stackable & Space-Saving – Designed to nest neatly.
